Carl Hitchens - tracking the self …
2011
I was trying to think of something humorous to scribe about, since that is the theme of a particular Facebook group blog I was posting to. I wanted to really stay away from politics and find a common ground point of non-political laughs. But, alas, I have failed. The funniest thing that came to mind in reflecting on life, as I paid some bills this morning, was Tea Party Rep. John Fleming lamenting making only $10 of investment money (translation: what's left after covering all family and business expenses and throwaway funding for recreation) for every $1 of my entire annual income. Somehow that just struck me as hilariously funny. It's like Saturday Night Live without the commercials. Did Fleming even include in his mathematical assessment his congressional salary of $174,000?
The other thing that got my funny bone this morning was the image of all of these Arizonians in my neck of the woods (Prescott and surroundings) displaying bumper stickers quoting condensed Ronal Reagan-speak (First Inaugural address – 1981): ". . . government is not the solution [to our problem]; it [government] is the problem." I find that rip-roaringly comical, when considering that there are within the districts of the deficit committee members charged with bringing the government's fiscal house in order 8,872,252 Social Security recipients. In Sen. Jon Kyl's (AZ) district alone there are 1,067,717. Think these government-is-the-problem folks will have a problem if the deficit committee goes after their checks? Which government will they blame, big government or small government? Hmmm. . .
