Have we not seen enough filibuster brinkmanship? How ironic to have two Democratic senators at loggerheads over how best to serve justice to military rape victims. Kind of illustrates this 113th Congress's "failure to launch." McCaskill is against filibuster but, oh wait, she's for it. Clearly the Goddess is under attack today around the world: a diametrical predation on women and their daughters—rape, torture, kidnapping; an oblique assault on their sons by the perversion of self-defense into murders of aggression. The feminine heart, the nurturing principle needed for any society to survive and flourish, is being systematically warred upon. (The matrilineal tradition of many Native American peoples illustrates the important place women and the feminine have held in their societies for maintaining social and spiritual balance.)
Accountability is the very essence of military order and discipline. Rape of female personnel is not a “behavior” issue correctible by tepid hand-slapping and perfunctory apologies. It is a crime that
should be subject to a strict standard of criminal damage and punishment enforced under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). In its historical absence to exercise a definitive policy concerning rape and its punishment, the military—Dep. of Defense complex has forfeited its right of absolute autonomy regarding cases of sexual assault. If the issue is about unit morale and cohesion, then guess what? The military chain of command should have stopped rewarding unfit, criminal behavior and have removed the unfit from command. By acting as scofflaws protecting their own gender, military brass were derelict in their duty to protect all in their charge, thus corroding morale through a culture of retribution against the innocent. How we treat women speaks volumes about who we are.
